This historic trail served as a highway connecting Missouri and Santa Fe, New Mexico, in the 19th century. Covering ground in New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri, the trail was used by fur traders, adventurers, stagecoach lines and thousands of gold seekers. 1827 Log Courthouse The 1827 Courthouse is the only remaining Mormon-owned building in Independence that dates back when the first Mormon settlers arrived in Missouri during the early 1830s. The log cabin was erected in 1827 as a courthouse and for a while was the only courthouse found between St. Charles, Illinois and the Pacific Ocean. It was bought in 1832 by Mormon settlers and used as a business, residence and meeting place. This site is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm or by appointment. Address: 107 W.
