Swope Park was donated to the city in 1896 by Colonel Thomas Swope. Today it has been turned into a recreational and entertainment area with numerous parks, picnic areas, athletic fields and group pavilions. It is also home to the Kansas City Zoo, the Swope Memorial and Blue River golf courses, the Starlight Theatre and the Lakeside Nature Center. This 176-acre (71 ha) area includes a fenced in area for dogs, several memorials, a lake and the Liberty Memorial Museum, among other areas and activities. The Powell Gardens is situated east of Kansas City on 915 acres of land. This botanical garden was formed in 1988. Fleming Park Fleming Park sits on more than 7,800 acres (3,150 ha) of land and is found close to Lee's Summit and Blue Springs, 15 minutes from Kansas City. This recreational area encompasses Lake Jacomo, Blue Springs Lake and beach, two campgrounds, numerous hiking and biking trails, two marinas, several historic sites and other facilities.
